I picked her up on the 14 of September, since then she joined and fit in my gadget family. Say "Hello" to her people.
The journey of finding her really fun and just a thrill. I was suppose to get her from Lenovo Midvalley, but too bad the customer service at Lenovo Midvalley sucks, frustrating and misleading. So, in the end the search ended at Low Yat Plaza KL. Hey not only they treat us well but also I get free cleaning kit, and mouse.(apart from other free stuff in the package!)
Why Lenovo?
O well, research had been made toward, HP's, Dell's, Acer's note book. But Lenovo really catches my eyes and the fact that it is IBM's family really help me to decide to get S10-2.
Being a nomad lately, I needed for a lighter notebook, to get connected anytime anywhere and at the same time serve my purpose for minimal working aid. With S10-2 only 3lbs 5.4oz travel weight and with the size of 10.2" x 7.6" x 0.7-1.8" (including battery) it fit so well in my handbag without putting so much weight to my other girl's stuffs. It compliments my Celcom broadband too.
For works and always being on the run, this is the best machines for me. S10-2 offered long battery life and performance reach the top of the heap when you talk about netbooks, with its 6-cell Li-ion 10.8 x 4.06Ah44 With battery, I can hope for the best.
The features that you might want to consider, 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz, come with Windows XP Home Edition (I am XP's fan), 10.1" WSVGA glossy LED-backlit display with integreted camera 1024x600, Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics, Broadcom 11b/g Wi-Fi Wireless, Dolby sound system, Bluetooth, 1 year Regional Carry-in Warranty, come with free 2nd Year Limited Warranty, and sleeve case.
Design:
cleaner and smoother appearance all around than then S10 generation. It does look thinner than the previous generation. The extended battery sticks out the back and raises the netbook up off a surface about 0.75", I like the fact that its comfortable for typing position and of course extra handle. But doesn't work well with the sleeves, but still its good.
The body finished with firm plastic used throughout the chassis, have no problem squeaking when you carry it. I was informed that the matte plastic finish on the inside and bottom of the netbook stayed scratch free. My only concern is the white keypad color for the Purple finish. 1. dust and 2. dirt. But so far it cleaned easy.
If you look at the back of this notebook, you can see that it was designd to put all the swappable component behind two removable panels, so it is another point to consider.
The speaker for this netbook are lap-firing, facing down underneath palmrest. The only problem with this is when the netbook is sitting on a soft surface like bed or lap, they get quite muffled. I think for Youtube and streaming music will work just fine, but when you intent to watch movie headphones would be the best aid.
I faced problem to adjust to the small keyboard space for start, but I guess in time I will get used to it. The support for this keyboard really excellent, no flex or trampoline effect when you type. IBM R51e's keyboard for me the best, but S10-2 is pretty good too.The individual keys feel sturdy with no wobble when you sliding your fingertips across the surface, the key action is smooth with very little click sound.
I am not used to the touch-pad, because R15e has special touch-point. So I cant really say much about this but as reviews say it is a Synaptics model with only multi-finger control which is "pinch" to zoom in on the cursor area. It has sensitivity and speed excellent. The surface for this pad is smooth and almost glossy finish. And it has 3 USB ports compared to R15e only have 2.
Peeps,
Well, I have no major complaints with my IBM Think-Pad (R51e), this baby has been with me for almost 5 years now! She still working quite well -just that sometimes she can be really slow and the fact that she's heavy for my old shoulder, so I decided to put her for home used. So, my confidence toward S10-2 already build up. If you need something with name and brand that you can trust, S10-2 should not be out of your sight.
So presenting my new baby:
comparing size to my wallet
So far I have no regret having her. With market price RM1549, S10-2 is able give value to your money. I wanted to get the Black finish, I was actually torn between Purple and Black, but the Black was out of stock that day, beside Purple does give me the sleek and girlish feeling, so not bad at all. Beside most of my gadgets are black (Ipod Video, Phones, IBM, External Hardisk etc) so why not this time I have one that Purple in color.
My gadget period started with IBM and I growing up with her, so I might be biased toward other brands. Well you have your choice, hope this help you a bit in your search.
